Lead – Darryl Fitzgerald

Lead - Darryl Fitzgerald

Date of birth: September 21, 1980

Hometown: Kitchener, Ontario

Current club: Heritage Greens (Kitchener, Ontario)

Canadian National Team debut: March 12th, 2011

International appearances: 1

Type of bowl used: Henselite – Tiger

Favourite tournament and why: WOBA – Week of bowls, you can’t top that. I’m starting to also lean towards Skins tournaments for the aggressive fast play.

How did you start playing bowls: My father started playing bowls before I was born with the Mutual Life of Canada Club in Kitchener-Waterloo, he suggested I give it a try since I started to wind down in other sports (baseball/basketball) and also to join him playing to spend time together. I tried it out for a summer part-time and got hooked. After my first district win and trip to Provincials I was a bowler for life.

When did you start playing bowls: I played as a “guest” when I was 17 (1997) part time with my Dad but didn’t officially become a member and play in tournaments until 2002 as I was heavily into Highschool and university up to that point.

Who is your greatest influence in bowls: It’s hard to pick just one, but my greatest is my father. He’s never been a district/provincial/national player, but he got me into bowls and pushed me to keep going farther and to improve. I also have to say that I owe a lot to the Mutual Life group of men’s bowlers (Carl Thiel, Al Baddeley, etc.) who (along with my Dad) coached me when I started and really go me going as well as Larry Chaput who was the first to get me into real bowls competition (district and provincial) and get me hooked for life.

Best player you have competed against and why: Ryan Bester – He was still in Canada when I started getting into provincials and I’ve never played against anyone with the type of command and catalogue of shots that he had.

As a team, it was the team of Steve McKerihan, John Devonshire, Dave Anderson and Fred Wallbank – as a full 4’s team they knew what they were doing, how to do it and then went out and did it – I haven’t run into a 4’s team as composed and prepared as them.

Aspirations beyond bowls: Simply to do and be the best I can in all my endeavours. To have a good job, a loving family and good friends for life.

Who is the greatest influence in your life: My Father & Grandfather – I have aspired to make both of them proud of me and to take what they have taught me (which is close to everything) to the highest level I can.
